IDEOLOGY

Ideology refers to the messages and values of the film. What is the film about ? How does it encourage us to feel or think about any social, moral or philosophical/existential  issues  or themes ? Does the film have a single basic message or is it more subtle and complex than that ? Does the film reinforces dominant ideologies and political /social.moral viewpoints or does it challenge them in a meaningful way ? Does the film force or encourage the audience to agree with and have allegiance with a specific character ?


Clues to a film's ideology and how it encourages audience to respond to it  can be found in the following :


Main character ( allegiance )

Other characters ( allegiance/ relationship with main character,hierarchy )

Genre conventions ( following, subverting )

Narrative structure  ( how plot is resolved, issues solved , charcters introduced , open/closed ending , missing elements ( ellipses))

SPECTATORSHIP

 


Spectatorship is a key concept to use  in the American Film since 2005   section of your exam.



ACTIVE/PASSIVE SPECTATORSHIP  DEFINITION

 

ACTIVE SPECTATORSHIP  in the audience  an be encouraged by the use of the following elements by the filmmaker



Film Form  ( e.g use of sound , editing , mise-en-scene , cinematography etc. This may include methods of seeming to encourage or avoid alignment with various characters ,who together may  represent certain values and the ideology of the film .  Also, relationships and hierarchies between characters may be seen as complex or changeable)

Genre  ( audience expectations, genre conventions and how they are subverted , characters and settings )

Narrative ( structure , opening/closing, equilibrium etc. )

Ellipses ( missing elements : narrative structure and events , film form, genre etc. )
